  1. Special Hallmarks :
                        i.            Developed “Pal’s sunflower seed medium” for the rapid laboratory diagnosis and epidemiological investigation of Cryptococcosis.
                      ii.            Modified “Pal’s sunflower seed medium” for studying in vitro genetic crossing in Cryptococcus neoformans and dermatophytes.
                    iii.            Developed “PHOL” (Pal, Hasegawa, Ono, Lee) stain for morphological studies of fungi.
                    iv.            Developed “NARAYAN” staining technique to study the moulds yeasts and algae.
                      v.            Developed “APRM” medium for primary isolation of fungi from clinical and environmental materials
                    vi.            Reported Cryptococcus neoformans for the first time in the environment of New Zealand and Nepal.
                  vii.            Established for the first time the etiologic role of Candida tropicalis in lung empyema of a diabetic patient; Cryptococcus neoformans in mastitis of goat and buffalo, Aspergillus fumigatus in keratitis of buffalo and cattle, rhinitis of camel and mule; A. niger in abortion of buffalo; Trichophyton verrucosum in dermatitis of barking deer; Flusarium solani in corneal ulcer of buffalo; Trichosporon beigelii in lung empyema of an immunocompromised patient and bovine burn wound; Nocardia asteroides in bovine corneal ulcer etc. in the world.
                viii.            Recorded for the first time chlamydiosis in parrot, dermatophytosis in Barking deer, hog deer and black buck, staphylococcosis in Hanuman Langur, aspergillosis in crow, pigeon, parrot and penguin, dermatophilosis in antelope and horse, candidosis in monkey and cryptococcosis in sheep, monkey and cat in India.
                    ix.            Reported first time environmental prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans in pigeon droppings in Djibouti. Also, isolated medically important fungi from soil of livestock farm on APRM medium in Djibouti for the first time.
                      x.            Elucidated for the first time the causative role of Candida albicans in mastitis of camel, Trichophton verrucosum in dermatitis of camel, and Aspergillus fumigatus in respiratory mycosis of chicks in Ethiopia.
                    xi.            Our research work is frequently cited in many textbooks, reviews and papers.
                  xii.            Published papers on brucellosis, rabies, leptospirosis, goat pox and Newcastle disease.
                xiii.            Developed the Department of Veterinary Public Health at Anand Agricultural University, Gujarat, India by starting MVSc and Ph.D. in V.P.H.
                xiv.            Started Ph.D. in Veterinary Public Health at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION OF DR. M. PAL
(First report in world, India, New Zealand, Belgium, Japan and Nepal)

  1. Formulated a new medium – ‘Sunflower seed agar’ – and performed extensive studies on its efficacy as a selective medium for the rapid isolation and quick identification of Cryptococcus neoformans from a wide variety of clinical and environmental materials.
  2. Modified ‘Sunflower seed medium’ for the sexual reproduction of Cryptococcus neoformans. Systematic studies proved the usefulness of this modified agar for sexual mating in dermatophytes and Cryptococcus neoformans.
  3. Reported for the first time the etiologic association of Cryptococcus neoformans in cases of mastitis in goat and buffaloes.
  4. Established for the first time the ecological association of Cryptococcus neoformans with the droppings of many avian species.
  5. Studied the occurrence and etiologic significance of Cryptococcus neoformans in the respiratory tract of patients with bronchopulmonary disorders for the first time in India.
  6. Isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans from cases of meningitis in dogs, pneumonia in a monkey and a sheep and ulcerated wound of a cat constitutes the only report of its kind in India.
  7. The etiologic role of Aspergillus fumigatus has been reported in the burn wound of a buffalo-calf for the first time.
  8. Recorded for the first time the etiologic significance of Nocardia asteroides in corneal ulcer of cattle.
  9. Studied the association of Aspergillus fumigatus with ocular infections of animals.  The pathogen was demonstrated in the eye lesions of buffalo and cattle for the first time.
  10. Established for the first time the association of Aspergillus fumigatus with rhinitis of mule    and camel.
  11. Reported for the first time the etiologic role of Aspergillus terreus in the mycetoma of foot of a dog.
  12. Conducted epidemiological survey for the prevalence of skin sensitivity to Histoplasma capsulatum in animals for the first time in India.
  13. Reported the prevalence of chlamydial infection in parrots for the first time in India.
  14. Established for the first time the association of Aspergillus niger with abortion in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis).
  15. Reported the occurrence of Aeromonas hydrophilus in the gastrointestinal tract of a caged deer for the first time in India.
  16. Aspergillus terreus has been established as a cause of disseminated aspergillosis in a caged pigeon from India.
  17. Isolated Candia tropicalis for the first time from the empyema pus of diabetic patient.
  18. Reported for the first time the involvement of Fusarium solani in the keratitis of water buffalo (Bos Bubalis).
  19. Described for the first time the colonization of a squamous cell carcinoma in the bovine horn core by Aspergillus terreus.
  20. Studied the role of Nocardia asteroides in the pneumonia of a grey parrot for the first time in India.
  21. Established for the first time the etiologic significance of Cryptococcus neoformans in canine otitis and feline osteomyelitis,
22.  Trichophyton verrucosum has been recorded for the first time as a cause of dermatitis in barking deer.
  1. Recorded for the first time dermatophilosis in a fallow deer.
  2. Discovered a new staining technique named ‘PHOL’ (Pal, Hasegawa, Ono, Lee) for morphological studies of fungi.
  3. Developed a new stain designated as “NARAYAN” to study morphology of moulds,      yeasts and algae.
  4. Isolated Staphylococcus aureus for the first time from the cutaneous lesion of a     Hanuman Langur.
  5. Recorded pulmonary aspergillosis due to Aspergillus fumigatus in a feral crow and a caged parrot for the first time in India.
  6. Established for the first time the environmental prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans in the environment of New Zealand.
  7. Isolated Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans from the empty wooden canary cases for the first time in Belgium.
  8. Reported for the first time cryptococcal osteomyelitis in a cat and systemic candidiasis in a dog in Japan.
  9. Reported the first isolation Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans from the avian excreta in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  10. Reported for the first time the isolation of Tricochosporon beigelii from the lung empyema of an immunocompromised patient and also from burn wound of cattle.
  11. Elucidated for the first time the etiologic significance of Curvularia lunata in keratitis of a rabbit, Aphanoascus fulvescens in canine dermatitis and Exserohilum rostratum in equine dermatitis.
  12. Described dermatitis due to Geotrichum candidum in a dog, stomatitis due to Geotrichum candidum in a dog, pneumonia due to Absidia corymbifera in chicks and guttural pouch mycosis due to Aspergillus nidulans in a horse for the first time in India.
  13. Transmission of Trichophyton rubrum from man to monkey is recorded for the first time in India.
  14. Studied the environmental prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans for the first time in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.
  15. Elucidated for the first time the etiologic role of fungi in bovine mastitis in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.
  16. Reported for the first time the bovine ringworm due to Trichophyton verrucosum in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.
  17. Investigated the prevalence of Aspergillus fumigatus in the environment of poultry farm for the first time in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.
